wash away

As it turns out, night classes were cancelled yesterday. I suppose I underestimated the emotional impact of that singular snowflake. Some of my students in my 5:30 class (second of the day) rushed in to tell me that it was “snowing hard” outside and “is class cancelled?” When I left class to go see what other Professors were doing, I looked down the hall toward the outside door. By the reaction of my students, I was expecting to see an avalanche heading toward Gainesville; alas, there was barely a noticeable flake. Still, one of my colleagues told me that it’s quite unusual even to see snow, so last night’s half inch, which eventually turned to rain by midnight, was really unusual and frightening to most people that had to drive home. To put it in perspective for myself, I thought about last year at Kent when the University shut down midway through the day. By the time I got to my car in the parking lot I had to dig out my tires so that I could get them moving. By that night, Brian Williams had raced to Cleveland to cover the storm and the plow had deposited a pile of snow so high that it blocked out light at the corner of my apartment. So I guess if you don’t live in a place with fires or hurricanes or tornados, winter is an eventful season. And with six classes, I will never complain about a snowflake day.

And since I’ve been slacking on my links, here is my new love, flowie.

Also, two weeks from tonight Lost will return. Over break my mom and I watched all of season 3, so we’re ready! This clip features one of my favorite little folkies, Joe Purdy. If you don’t know his music, check it out. It’s really hard to be sad when you hear his music. Great for winter.
