there will be crosby, stills, and nash
While everyone else is laying out their outfits, bedazzling their business cards, and packing their pink foam curlers for AWP in New York City, I am obsessively checking the radar for Tybee Island, Georgia, where I will be running the half marathon on Saturday. Right now the projection is for mid 60s, though it’s still too far in advance to count any chicks.
Even though I’ve had several weekends of doing ten mile runs, I’m really nervous that at the 12th mile I’m just going to fall over, and the race volunteers will have to just roll me into the ocean. But from what I’ve heard, the tem mile mark is always a tough place, which is why it’s good to do a half-marathon before the full. Marty Jerome, a runner, coach, and writer (and supplier of 30 years of the runner’s journal, of which my Dad probably has 27 years worth stored in his closet and could tell you the temperature, location and distance he ran on April 19th, 1986) says that the reason you need to do a half marathon in training is because about ten miles in you can hear the devil laughing at you, and you need to get used to that sound! I think I experienced this last Saturday when I mistakenly ignored the four or five miles of steep incline while plotting the course. I’m just able to walk again today!
Anyway, while I’m sad to miss AWP, I’m looking forward to this weekend. Hopefully I’ll get some good pictures.

while on tybee island, i recommend Fanny’s—they have amazing shrimpburgers, if you’re the carnivorous type. tybee’s a strange place overall ( i spent my all my summers on those shores), but savannah’s beautiful.
