to queue in clogs–only at Euro 2008
Every two years something lovely happens—a major world soccer tournament. This year, of course, is Euro 2008 in Switzerland and Austria. Apparently there is a critical beer shortage in Berne. Now if the Weissbier taps out in Vienna, holy moly. Latch the doors and keep the kids away from the windows because these ladies are on their way:
Hungary didn’t qualify for the tournament this year. But there’s always hope. And there’s always FIFA 2010. Even though they haven’t qualified since I was six years old, I’m really looking forward to the qualifying match against Denmark in September. And as a Cleveland native, I’m well accustomed to crushing sporting disappointments, so I’ll fit in perfectly. I should probably learn how to say football in Hungarian before then.

i’ve been watching this all week! france is doing awful.
i enjoy a lot of sports, but there’s something i just love about soccer. I think it’s because it’s the one thing left in this world that america hasn’t dominated. i dunno.

it’s futball (from the word football, we have just hungarinazed it), or the shorter form is foci (fotsy). but i suppose the real hungarian name is labdarúgás (labda=ball, rúgás=kicking). we use all of them.
i hope i could help

the france italy game should be great. the world cup rematch and the only hope for both teams who got stomped by the ladies in clogs. and it just seems like a real sport. with real fans!
and g–kosiiiiiiiiiii (i don’t know how to spell it) for the words. you know if you say football here people think of the american kind. but i’m sure if i asked someone what their favorite labdarúgás team was, they would (well probably sink instantly into a language coma) but definitely not think of anything american
i can’t wait to use it the next time i’m at a steelers game!

and yes, hungary was so very cool in labdarúgás, but nowadays… we are not that good at it .
anyway those were the days:

and the best hungarian footballer, Puskás Ferenc, whose name is said to be the most famous hungarian name ever:

and in a hungarian soccer game you should shout:
hajrá Magyarország!
or
Ria Ria Hungária!

so please practice. we might go to a soccer, i mean, foci meccs.
